View Full Version : Chirping sound then fuse blows

I have a 5241 that makes a chirping sound that seems to emminate from the center where the generator and motor meets. It only happens whenever there's a load on it. One time the chirping became constant and after about ten seconds the "system fuse" blew (15A fuse near the front).
I use the generator to run emergency lighting (all fluorescent electronic ballast). The generator is new, but it's past the warranty date. Does anyone have any idea what this is?

Hi!
Could this chirping noise be the bendix of the starting failing to retract? Maybe you're hearing the flywheel and starter meshing. You would know that is the case if you look under the starter, and there are pieces of metal laying all over. The flywheel is made of a much stronger metal, so you will only have to replace the starter in that case.
If you purchased this 5241 from an authorized dealer, I am pretty sure I can have this taken care of under warranty. Email me at kelly@zillerelectric.com. Make sure to include the date of purchase, and the serial number, and I can see when it was manufactured.
I'd like to get a warranty guy out there, because I am curious what is making this noise. I've never seen a stator/rotor chirp.

Thanks for the reply.
At first I thought that it might be the bendix gear not retracting also, but I don't think that would cause the system fuse to blow. The chirping noise (or maybe more like a "rent" noise) only happens when there's a load. If I open the main circuit breaker the chirping stops. This points me to the brush assembly. What do you think?
I will get the information you requested.

That is what is confusing me, The only time I have came across a system fuse blowing is when the 23 or 94 communication wires were shorted.
Pre-mature brush wear doesn't happen on these units. The brushes are located near the exhaust.
Send me the serial #, I will see what I can do!

So, the brushes are at the backside (guess I should've looked at the drawing). That blows that theory. Wires 23 and 194 go to the transfer switch relay, but the transfer switch operates normally. I guess we could speculate all day.
Anyway, I have the information you requested. The purchase date is 3/14/07 and the serial is 4714718. Thanks for all your efforts.

Call me when you get a chance. Your generator is covered under warranty until 3/14/10. I will find out where you live, and put a GOOD company in touch with you.
