I have a 5 year old 13kw air cooled Generac. It has been trusty and without issues. I just had a thought:

Is it possible to have an air cooled, 1800 rpm, natural gas fueled standby generator of the same size? This would be the perfect option for most folks, if you factor noise, engine longevity and a cost basis.

If so, why is it not on the market? If not, what are the technical reasons why not?

Best-man...I'll help get this thread going. 1800 rpm is fantastic. They used to make 'em. Now its a matter of mass production & marketplace economics. I believe it is 2 hp of engine = 1 kw of generation. An air cooled engine's power curve is not quite symetrical but close. Example: I have an Onan rated at 5,000 watts @ 1800 rpm...about 10 hp at that speed. That engine is rated at 18 hp @ 3600 rpm. Obviously, at 1800 rpm, that little thing sounds like a Cadallic and would run just about forever. The cost of a genset like we now love would probably be nearly 3x if equiped with an adequately sized "half speed" engine.

So far as I know, units rated for Prime Power is now about the only way to get 1800 rpm anymore. You and I might pay extra. Problem is, nobody else will.:(

Now, here's one for you: Let's design one (is Kelly Meyers listening?) that has a variable speed engine coupled to a variable speed transmission governed by variable load demand. Think about it!:D

PS: I also have two big 15/16kw Guardian's and love 'em!
Best to you!
