View Full Version : 25KW stops running, cold start

Off-grid application
Remote start>
Last winter when the temp was below 20? F half the time it would start and stop 30 seconds into a run cycle. I could get it started by manually starting through the computer control and cycling it on and off three or four times with 20 second runs.
Now it fails to stay running half the time when temps are 50? to 70? F.
The Gen indicator lights are always coolant temp/level ?
The coolant temp and level are normal.
Any help would be appreciated

My guess is a new pcb. anyone know how much $ for a new pcb?

You will probably be asked the model and serial number. If they can make a buck you will be answered, if not you will be ignored.

It sounds like you might have a bad coolant level or temp sender.
It sounds like dave has a bad attitude.

I will get you a cost on a new PCB on Monday. I agree with Gman that it sounds like you have a bad sensor, which should not be too costly to correct.

Take a quick look at the coolant level, if its not right up to the neck on the radiator, make sure to correct that before moving on to the sensor or PCB.

Thanks guy's! I will check the radiator tonight. I did check the over-flow tank and it was to the mark.

The Gen is a 25kw elite 2006. I will get the SR number as well.

cheers,

Dave, Kelly has responded to all my post over the last two years and has never asked me to buy anything?
Whats up ?

Thanks again Kelly!

Well I do apologize for getting a little negative there. On a different thread I was asked for my model & serial number to help with my problem and then it just died. Kelly does such a great job here, plus he seems to have a little bit more of an in with tech support and odd misc generator issues. I have told him on the phone before how good the site is. So I was feeling a little frustrated in not getting any kind of answer for so long. However, realistically, what can one reasonably expect. When I think about it more objectively this information is provided free of charge and how can we complain ( ha I did ! )

UPDATE,
You guys nailed it. The coolant level was a little low. The coolant level in the reservoir was a 1/4" below the line but in the radiator it was an inch low.
Filled it to the top, problem solved.
I hope my cold weather starting problem last winter was the same issue? Maybe being a little low on coolant and the shrinking of the thermal mass of the coolant put it below the sensor?
P.S.
Over 600 hours on her.

Thanks again to all,

Nice job - and it didn't cost anything :D. If you don't have a pile of dead animal carcasses near the generator from drinking your spilled coolant then its probably safe to assume that it may have just been a little low - the generator shouldn't "use" any coolant unless there is a problem. :D
