I noticed after the local Generac rep changed the oil on my 15kw propane, the oil filter is longer.

Does this extra length mean we can fill the generator with 2 quarts of oil instead of the 1.7 qts the manuals says?

I've noticed that the recommend oil filter from the Generac manual is Part #070185F, and that this is a 90mm long filter. The filters that a lot of Generac dealers sell (including Ziller) is the #070185B, which is 75mm long. That's only slightly more than 1/2 inch difference, I doubt it would allow you to accomodate an additional 0.3 quarts, which is about 9.6 ounces, thats over a cup of oil.

You are correct Jason, we do sell the "old" filter. The same filter that has been used on the 992cc for years upon years.

Guardian just released this new filter, and the smaller dealers are probably already buying them. Bigger dealers like us purchase oil filters in 3,000-10,000 batches.

I'm not really sure why they released this new filter media, but in order for me to move thousands of oil filters quickly (so I can stock the new one), I'm giving away 10 old filters with each generator purchase.

They increased the filter by 15% in length, and doubled our cost. :(

On a side note, I just received thousands of the new 992cc maint kits with the new filters. So all of our maint kits will include the "extended" filter.

Is there any problem with going to NAPA Auto Parts and getting a generac number cross over and purchasing a NAPA gold oil filter?

Hi Kelly,

Just re-reading my own post shows that I had a bit of a negative tone that was not intended. Obviously there is nothing wrong with the old filters, as I still see those listed for sale in plenty of places, and I've seen that they specifically do mention that the old filters are approved for use on the new generators.

I was mostly trying to answer the question of whether or not the new, longer, filter would allow a full 2.0 quarts of oil rather than the stardard 1.7 quarts. My assumption is "No" because 15mm of additional length does not seem to add enough volume to handle an additional 9.6 ounces of oil.

IF anyone finds and automotive filter that is suitable, I'd like to know what it fits. Be careful though as is not only needs to thread on and have a gasket line up, but may heve to have an internal bypass.

You can go to both fram.com and pureoil.com (purolator) and put in the generac part number in the competitors filter search links and come up with their replacement filter. They both had filters for the 070185B. Then input the filter part number in the vehicle application link and see the vehciles it fits. They fit some Toyota's, Geo etc.
Personally I would use the Generac filter. Sure Generac doesn't make their own filters but who does? Made in S. Korea is written on the filter. I would also be concerned if a bypass is needed or maybe the filter medium is different and won't pass the volume of oil. I doubt these generator engines put out the oil pressure of cars. Who knows so why risk it. JMHO.

I personally would be worried about invalidating my warranty by placing a filter not recommended by Generac steven

It will not invalidate the warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 makes it illegal for a dealer or manufacturer to invalidate a warranty for using another manufacturers parts unless THEY can prove the item caused the failure or unless they offer the part for free. It was passed to keep manufacturers from hindering competition. Generac may try to tell you it will but they will fold quickly if pressed because they know this.

Does my recent purchase apply? :D

Looks like I just missed out on that deal. My generator should be showing up tomorrow and I can't wait to get it running.

Kelly,

I had you sell my next door neighbor (E. Wayne Weaver) of Valparaiso, In. a 16KW unit last Tuesday plus a 1000 dollar whole house transfer switch. I know he would be thrilled if you included him in your ten filter offer.
