I have a Garrdian 16KW generator. I am told that I should run it at full load (ie; turn on all my lights), when the generator is running.

Hi Jack,
The person may have been referring to the "break in procedure". Generac recommended doing a 4 hour break-in on the 992cc engine for years and years. The old break-in procedure consisted of:
1st hour = 25% load
2nd hour = 50% load
3rd hour = 75% load
4th and final hour = 100% load.
Then change the oil and filter. Replace the oil with 5w-30 synthetic.

THE NEW "BREAK IN PROCEDURE" CONSISTS OF:
10 hour run time, and replace the oil with 5w30 synthetic, or straight 30.
In cold weather climates, I highly advise NOT to use straight 30 oil. When it is cold, it will not pump very well.

It is not necessary by any means to keep any kind of load on the generator while it is running. The electronic governor will keep it in check with the load presented.

Here's another reason I really wish I could find somebody in my area that's experienced at installing these generators and understands what's required for proper setup. Even the Elite dealer doesn't install the units they sell. The Installation and Owner's Manual says on page 12 that "These units have been run and tested at the factory prior to being shipped and do not require any type of break-in." Page 13 refers to letting the engine run at full load for 20-30 minutes listening for abnormal vibrations or other noises. So does that mean that a 10 hour break-in is completely unnecessary, or is it still a good idea, but something they don't require for the warranty?

Or is that 10 hour break-in maybe just to test the neighbors' reaction? :)
