I'm thinking of having my electrician wire a 125 volt receptacle to the 20 amp battery charging source so I can plug in the cold weather gear in the winter and unplug in the summer. Is this a practical idea? If I do it, it will mount inside the 20 KW generator housing, should I use a weather proof box for the receptacle? Should it be GFI?

Simply run a new circuit into the generator. Install a recepticle. Its up to local code, but you are not required to use a GFI if it is not "easily accessible". Don't use GFI's unless you have to.
